How to disassemble a Behringer C-1 Microphone

The other week I bought a used Behringer C-1 condenser mic in Mercatino Musicale, an italian musical classifieds website. The C-1 is a cheap but relatively good chinese made condenser mic: I got it for 30 EUR, practically like new. It only had a small problem: the XLR socket came away every time I pulled the microphone cord out. Don't know if the seller knew about it or not (wink wink): but anyway it turned out it was just a matter of regulating a small screw inside the microphone. Opening it isn't anything obvious, as I found out, even reading Behringer doc and looking around on the net. So, here's a mini video on how to disassemble and reassemble the C-1. And how to properly let the XLR socket stay in its place. I won't bother you with an evaluation of the microphone itself: the net is already full of every kind of review and videos about this microphone.

L'annuncio è opera dell'agenzia pubblicitaria berlinese Serviceplan.

Gear review: Casio SA-46

The other day I bought a Casio SA-46 as birthday present for my little nephew, who is now three years old. Really: I didn't buy it for me. Even if I would like to. Anyway: it's a 32 keys mini keyboard, not too toyish, and fun to use. Casio has been putting out several good real musical instruments in the last years, but even these little electronic keyboards are interesting and don't sound bad at all (even if some presets do feel remarkably more artificial than others). For a more detailed description, watch me unbox the SA-46 in the first video.

In the video below you can hear the 10 preset songs (I don't think they're available anywhere else on the net, I sampled them with my usb audio interface directly from the phone output).

Oh, my nephew liked the instrument. He discovered the first preset song, and didn't want to try and play with the keys at first. He only wanted to play 'Ode to joy' in a dance arrangement, all the time, at full volume. In order to avoid retaliation from my brother I managed to partially silence the unit, blocking the volume knob at half the run with a bit of plastic coated steel wire.

marte rojo

Arthur C. Clarke scrisse una frase molto nota (ai fanboy, almeno): Politicians should read science fiction, not westerns and detective stories.

http://corrierefiorentino.corriere.it/firenze/notizie/cronaca/2011/24-marzo-2011/linea-due-nuovo-capolinea-arrivera-piazza-unita-190299504406.shtml

http://ricerca.repubblica.it/repubblica/archivio/repubblica/2011/03/06/tramvia-si-parte-anche-senza-il.html

Partiranno veramente 'entro aprile' i cantieri?

Ecco quanto riporta il quotidiano australiano 'The Star'.

Life è stata imbrogliata", ha detto McCarter.

Life strombetta descrivendole come "rare e mai viste prima".

Three-state checkboxes in vb6

I still have (shame on me) to work with VB6. Visual Basic 6.0 standard checkboxes have three values, checked, unchecked, grayed out. The latter can be useful to cycle boolean fields between true, false and null values. Problem is, normally if you start with a grayed out checkbox, then comes the checked value, then the unchecked, and then ..the checked value again. To cycle between the three state, like a .NET Winforms checkbox with the threestate property set, use this Validate event

Private Sub chkMyCheckbox_Validate(Cancel As Boolean)
 If chkMyCheckbox.Value = 1 Then
   chkMyCheckbox.Value = 2
   Cancel = True
 End If
End Sub

Don't know why it works exactly, but it does...

RemoveWAT and Windows Seven SP1

Disclaimer: your mileage may very well vary.
Disclaimer: This article is for informational and educational purpose only.

Windows 7 SP1 has been out for a few days. I wanted to try it so I downloaded the full 2gb iso image with the complete 32/64 bit Service Pack. It turned out that I tested it  on a 64 bit Windows Ultimate PC, which had Hazar's RemoveWat installed (and not a problem with it for months and months). The dreaded KB971033 was not installed.

In this scenario, SP1 installed without a hitch. On rebooting:

- KB971033 was installed
- Windows showed the 30 days to activation warning

Actually, KB971033 seemed to be installed on another reboot, this method to remove it worked only later. Trying to reapply RemoveWAT (2.2.6) had these quaint results:

- KB971033 was reinstalled!
- Windows still showed the 30 days to activation warning

The activation process in itself seemed not work (SLUI.EXE reported a problem).

Trying Windows Loader 1.9.7 by Daz (for diagnostics) reported a 'another crack installed, uninstall it'.

RemoveWat 2.2.6 wasn't unable to actually uninstall it. I had to dig out 'RemoveWAT 2.1', presumably the exact RemoveWat that was installed in the first place to revert Windows (with SP1 installed) to an 'untouched trial' according to Daz's Loader.

With this, it is possible to apply a legit license to the installation (or apply Windows Loader 1.9.7 and then remove KB971033 for good with:

dism /online /remove-package /PackageName:Microsoft-Windows-Security-WindowsActivationTechnologies-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.1.7600.16395

from an elevated command prompt and live a life of crime).

artepupper 0.1

UPDATE: try 0.2!
Arte tv's site, http://liveweb.arte.tv host hundreds of high quality videos with interesting performances of classical,  jazz and alternative pop music. The only drawback is that those videos, often more than an hour long, can only be viewed streamed online.
They are (at the time of this writing, march 2011) all in Flash video format. They are played with a flash player, and streamed from a server with the RTMP protocol over HTTP.  The RTMP 'address' is 'hidden' in a second webpage called by the webpage hosting the video with its player. In reality there are several tricks to view the videos offline, they can be grabbed from the browser cache, the RTMP address can be intercepted with URL grabbers. There is a freeware tool/library, RTMPDump, able to download the FLV file from the streaming server. Unfortunately, it must often be compiled, it's a command line utility, and it still needs the RTMP address. Here, http://c.ingrao.free.fr/code/, at Carmelo Ingrao's software page, you can download several scripts to ease the process. The most advanced is Juan Domingo's Perl script. Unfortunately, all this still requires a certain degree of familiarity with Unix style utilities and programming, which I do have, but the majority of people interested in arte's videos don't . So, I've written a small Windows program (it requires the  .NET Framework, 2.0 or more, and it should work without problems in Windows from XP/2000 onwards, provided .NET is installed) which simply takes the video URL, a filename to save the video to and downloads the file. The program is just a user friendly interface to RTMPDump.exe, which does the actual downloading: I've included it within the archive, for the sake of installation ease, but of course if the file can be download at all it's all thanks to RTMPDump's author Andrej Stephanchuk and Howard Chu. My utility is just a conversion of Juan Domingos's perl script, using the same regular expressions. Please note that this program, and all the other scripts, will work as long as arte won't change their site: once they'll modify their xhtml code, or switch to an HTML5 player or whatever, the program will probably display a 'can't find eventnumber' message and will refuse to start RTPMdump. If possible I'll update the program, when I have the time.

To get the software: download artepupper01.zip. Unzip the archive somewhere where you have read/execute/write file permissions (note that sometimes operating system policies forbid you to run .net software from network drives). There is no setup utility, nor one is really needed: to uninstall simply delete the files. Run the artepupper.exe 'a' icon - if you want you can create a shortcut to it on the desktop or in the start menu.. In most cases the 'RTMPDump Path' text box can be ignored, it's the path to the rtmpdump.exe utility, which is included. If one wants to use another rtmpdump, it can be changed here, if one knows what to do.

The arte video URL must be pasted in the URL Video arté live web. It must be the full URL, something like http://liveweb.arte.tv/fr/video/La_fille_de_Madame_Angot/. If you can't get this kind of URL navigating the site, try searching for video with the 'recherche avancée' advanced search button. Then choose a filename/path for the .flv video with the '<<' button. Click 'Download'. If all goes well in a few seconds artepupper will load the pages, scan them for the RTMP address, and launch RTMPdump.exe with the correct parameters. RTMPdump.exe lives independently in a text windows, it will show the download progress and then exit (without a warning, one could think of calling a wrapper script..). In the meantime artepupper can be quit, or used to download other videos.

This was written mostly on trains here in Tuscany, and tested moderately. Let me know if there are any problems, which I'll try to fix when I can.

Eager Beavers at M$

using System.Configuration;

System.Configuration.Configuration config =
   ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration (ConfigurationUserLevel.None);

config.AppSettings.Settings["testkey"].Value = "testvalue";
config.Save(ConfigurationSaveMode.Modified);
ConfigurationManager.RefreshSection("appSettings");

Test this C# code on a standard C# project in Visual Studio. It's simply a few statements to write in app.config.
It won't compile, even if you have all the right using statements, and even if other System.Configuration objects are recognized. The errors  usually go like:

Error 1 The type or namespace name 'Configuration' does not exist in the namespace 'System.Configuration' (are you missing an assembly reference?) d:\work\fbtest3\WindowsFormsApplication2\WindowsFormsApplication2\Form1.cs 22 34 WindowsFormsApplication2

There is a simple solution, which you won't you usually find looking around. Add a reference to system.configuration to your project references. I first found this quirk in VS 2005 a few years ago. Today, after fuggedabout'ing it and spending half an hour wondering, I've verified it is still present in VS2008 and VS2010.
