Usenet è ancora un posto interessante dove scoprire cose nuove oppure divertirsi in modo (relativamente) intelligente con l'inaspettato. Sul gruppo chitarristico della gerarchia it.* ieri c'è stato un thread liutistico-linguistico molto singolare. Lo spunto è stato fornito da questo video su Youtube:

Ovviamente si tratta di Jimmy Page, che viene intervistato per qualche minuto riguardo alle sue chitarre, in particolare la sua Les Paul. Comprendere bene quanto detto, anche per l'argomento piuttosto specialistico trattato non è proprio trivial ma ho voluto spenderci qualche minuto provando a fare una trascrizione. Ho capito fischi per fiaschi in un punto un po' biascicato, poco dopo però non sono riuscito ad afferare il nome e cognome di un certo chitarrista, evidentemente a me sconosciuto, mi sembrava che Page dicesse Harry o Erik Princes o Pleeces o qualcosa del genere. Ho provato anche a 'riavvolgere' il video più volte, ma niente di niente. Era il tizio della foto sopra, che negli anni '60 suonava soprattutto Gibson, poi si spostò più su chitarre di altro brand. La cosa divertente è che - giuro - meno di 72 ore fa ho strimpellato un pezzo preso da Total Guitar di Nov. 08 con Mr. Playedone on the cover. Metto la trascrizione corretta dal bravo 'ddguitar' qui sotto. La morale di tutto questo ? Devo esercitarmi di più con le ..scale.

JP well I customized my number two lespaul which I gained as a real old vintage one too however that gave any combination of one or two but it's a little bit fuzzy because all of these pushpull and switches here but the reality of it was the thing that I found mooost important to me was the fact that you could reverse the phase on it reversing the phase you get you

get a closer approximation of the sound that peter green would get

JP and certainly BB King and when some of these came out with the pick ups that were out of phase and you know accidentally I don't know I set it on both of them and here we go

do you use specifically for the big sound or

JP oh yeah yeah I use em quite a bit it's just as simple as that you pull it out and you get them reversed pop it back in you get the full whack and everything

and this guitar got also a very very slim neck and probably people speculate as to whether it came that way or you had it done it is something that you had

JP I didn't have it done this guitar is sort of been it's one of these guitars was made to come my way because as I said Joe Walsh insisted that I bought it and he was right It came as it was the only thing that changed was that really in essence the tuning heads it already came with this scalloped neck

I've got to say that I inherited THIS OTHER guitar from Jeff Beck which was the

yardbirds guitar which was another BRAND (fender),I MIGHT ADD but the reality of

it is that it came to me and that had a very shallow neck as well it is as that came to me that way this came to me as well it always was so we need to go back in the day when ERIC PLAYED ONE, FOR INSTANCE it was always as knowna as a really user friendly guitar, THE LES PAUL.

Excusatio non petita ?

Bankitalia: gli immigrati tolgono il lavoro agli italiani

Ieri e oggi Repubblica e il Corsera hanno presentato articoli relativi a un rapporto della Banca d'Italia secondo il quale si mostrerebbe che gli immigrati non tolgono il lavoro agli italiani.

Leggendo gli articoli con un minimo di attenzione gli articoli però non mi riesce di trovare quasi niente al riguardo... «non si è riflessa in minori opportunità occupazionali per gli italiani», d'accordo - le "opportunità occupazionali" sarebbero esattamente ...? - «complementarietà tra gli stranieri e gli italiani più istruiti e le donne», e tra i (tanti) italiani maschi e poco istruiti ?

Particolarmente gustoso il passo in cui le donne sarebbero più libere di contribuire all'"offerta di lavoro" perchè gli immigrati si occupano dell'assistenza agli anziani e dei piccoli. Naturalmente: non riescono a trovare un posto all'asilo comunale, ma le donne italiane possono permettersi una baby sitter extracomunitaria, oppure, anche con i genitori ultraottantenni affidati alle badanti, che si possono permettere tutti, hanno tempo finalmente di lavorare.

Ma una grande speranza viene dai futuri immigrati di seconda generazione , «che rappresenteranno una componente rilevante della futura forza lavoro nel Paese, registrano significativi tassi di abbandono scolastico e un livello di competenze inferiore a quello, già modesto nel contesto internazionale, degli italiani».

Curiosamente, almeno al Nord, gli immigrati hanno un tasso di occupazione maggiore che quello italiano, e redditi minori. Saranno contenti i datori di lavoro, visto anche che in soli 17 anni dal 1991 al 2008, il tasso di immigrazione è decuplicato dallo 0.6 a 6%, così almeno si apprende da Repubblica.

Ah, il Corriere oggi pubblica una lettera di uno studente leghista e la replica di Galli della Loggia - forse per compensare con un po' di buonsenso, chissà.

Giardino del Tribolo

Oggi su la Repubblica (non trovo il link online sorry) e credo anche su La Nazione (idem) c'è un paginone con un articolo veramente raccapricciante sul "Giardino del Tribolo" all'Isolotto, un quartiere periferico di Firenze.

Normalmente per "Giardino del Tribolo" si intenderebbe qualcosa come Boboli o il Giardino dei Semplici. Niccolò Tribolo era l'architetto che in buona sostanza ha inventato il giardino all'italiana.

Via Niccolò Tribolo a Firenze è una via in mezzo a viale Talenti e via del Pollaiolo, c'è un piccolo giardino pubblico di periferia, in mezzo a un paio di anonime palazzine di periferia fiorentine risalenti a occhio a una 40ina di anni fa. Sono edifici abitati da sempre da 'gente che lavora', italiani di solito di reddito medio basso. Oggi anche sempre più anziani e immigrati.

Apparentemente adesso nomen est ..omen. Si parla di ben tre bande di teppistelli, una di rom, una di albanesi, che si contendono il "territorio", spaccio di droga, minacce ai residenti. I cronisti parlano anche di 'teste rasate', da una parte i soliti graffiti, dall'altra scritte più minacciose come -vado a memoria - 'morte agli albans'. I residenti iniziano a pensare all'uso - letterale - del bastone.

Quello che è più sconcertante sono i numerosi episodi di maltrattamenti di animali che si sarebbero verificati. Si parla di gatti con la coda mozzata e di ricci "torturati col fuoco e poi

fatti esplodere con un petardo". Che senso ha ? Si possono capire le intimidazioni, lo spaccio di droga, che ha la logica del soldo facile perlomeno, ma seviziare un riccio è pura psicopatologia.

Anche per un pessimista cronico come il sottoscritto una notiza come questa arriva come una sorpresa molto spiacevole. Non pensavo che a Firenze si potesse arrivare già a questi livelli. Mi viene voglia di trovarmi un posto tranquillo nel 'contado'.

Dopo le numerose chiamate ai vigili e alla polizia non è cambiato molto. La pubblicazione dell'articolo sui giornali invece a giudicare da http://press.comune.fi.it/hcm/hcm5199-1-UfficioStampa-HomePage.html (vedi il 14 agosto) sembra aver svegliato gli immaginifici politici cittadini, per ora molto impegnati a rimandare grossi progetti come TAV e Meccanotessile al prossimo decennio, inoltrato...

Mah, mi vien sempre più voglia di trovarmi un posticino tranquillo nel

contado.

P.S. 20/8/09... Segnalo questo intervento al riguardo per un punto di vista molto diverso dal mio sulla questione. Apprezzo e seguo regolarmente il blog di RV, pur essendo raramente d'accordo con quello che c'è scritto...

The strange case of ADO Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors

As I already have written, one of the pleasures of my job is maintaining a rather old VB6 app.

It uses ADO on MS SQL 2000 and 2005 servers. A few weeks ago, a couple of sites where the applications is installe started reporting the apparently random runtime exception "Multiple-stesp OLE DB operation generated errors". Most of the time this error means that ADO is trying to write a NULL in a field where NULLs are not allowed, or that it's trying to write a varchar value longer than the maximum field length allows. I rewrote the module signaling the exception including a loggin feature to write in a text file log the precise code line and the precise recordset contents involved. Nothing strange: the error seems to happen on a simple ADODB.Recordset update method, when adding or updating a record. The exception is raised when writing to a decimal field: but the values used are always perfectly legal.

E.g.

rs.Open "SELECT * from table where id = 17",connection, adOpenDynamic,adOptimistic

rs!TextValue = "yup"

rs!DecimalValue = 3.14 ' exception is raised

rs!OtherValue = "lebarbaz"

rs.Update

Apparently under the same initial conditions sometimes the error appears, sometimes not. Sometimes days would pass with no problems, and then a hail of errors for hours and hours.

The only thing the different sites showing the error have in common is the presence of many table with text fields fulled to the max: for instance the company name field is say 70 char max, and many company names used are 70 charachters long.

I found zero-nada-nilch on the Internet about this error: other than buying something like Soft-ICE and trying to debug ADO o the SQL provider I've tried to simply circumvent the error.

This, at least for the last weeks seems to work:

rs.CursorsLocation = adUseClient

rs!DecimalValue = Cdec(3.14) 'Cdec is now needed, simply because I changed the cursorlocation

That's it, a vulcanian logic solution. Probably changing the cursor location avoid some strange memory allocation problem with ADO and/or the MS Sql provider I'm using. Still not as amazing as the bugs and missing features I found in the ADOX library trying to manage some mdb access files years ago, but much more disconcerting.
